A community primary school for pupils aged 4–11, providing mainstream education and SEN provision for moderate learning difficulties.

The Hythe School — New Office, Lift Installation & Nursery Conversion

The project split into two phases: a new office and passenger lift installed over the summer holidays of 2023, and an old nursery building converted into new classrooms, washrooms and a kitchen ready for the new year in 2024.

Two phases, one continuous programme

Phase 1 — lift & new office

  • New passenger lift, sized within a 1460 x 1515mm shaft, to give students with mobility issues access to the first floor
  • Locked at all times with key-code access restricted to authorised staff, for safeguarding and health & safety
  • New office for the caretaker/premises manager

Phase 2 — nursery conversion

  • Conversion of the old nursery building into new classrooms, washrooms and a kitchen
  • Works completed and ready in time for the new school year

Overcoming Challenges
Short notice and limited drawings

The project start date came at short notice, requiring us to renegotiate supplier lead times quickly. The specification and drawings we were given were limited, but close communication between contract administrators and the end users ironed out the details as we went.

Working around the school day

We gained access over a weekend to erect Herras fencing and put safety precautions in place before students arrived on the Monday. The originally designed access ramp was found to be inadequate, so we worked with the client to design and install an improved ramp without affecting the schedule or budget.

Project Impact

The new lift has given students with mobility issues access to more classrooms and facilities across two floors, expanding the curriculum available to them. The new classrooms have helped keep class sizes to a minimum, and the school’s reputation in the surrounding area has grown with the addition of extra capacity each year.
