Ripley C of E School — SEN Specialist Refurbishment (Phase 3)
Phase 3 at Ripley C of E School had a short, four-week turnaround: strip and replace existing floors, replace toilet units and windows, and redecorate three classrooms across the existing school building and teaching block — plus external works to a new outdoor play area.
Internal works
- Strip and remove existing floor covering, supply and install new vinyl flooring
- Supply and fit mag-lock, key-operated fire doors
- Modify and reposition existing sinks to accommodate infant pupils’ height
- Replace existing windows with new aluminium doors, steps and galvanised rails
- Redecoration to three classrooms
External works
- Removal of existing turfed areas, replaced with a subbase and rubber crumb play surface
- Supply and install a new canopy with polycarbonate sheets and support bars
- Padding of existing posts with post protectors
Once the canopy roof was installed, it became clear the drawings had the wrong dimensions and the roof sat too low. We arranged a meeting with the school and designers, gained sign-off on a specification change, and dismantled and reinstalled the roof to be fully weatherproof.
The original specification hadn’t accounted for underground drainage to the new roof, and the groundworks needed turned out to be greater than planned. We added drainage tying into the main sewer line and worked with the council to gain approval for the additional scope — all while staying on schedule.
On completion, the Ripley site had a fresher, cleaner atmosphere ahead of its planned reopening — with enhanced ventilation throughout, a new breakout room for a quieter space away from classroom distractions, and additional lighting and data points across the school.
“Colours Building Ltd have done a fantastic job with the refurbishment and were able to cope with the changes in specification efficiently.”
