Epsom & Ewell School
West Ewell, Surrey, KT19 9JW
A coeducational secondary academy for 900+ pupils aged 11–18, including a range of SEND provision.
Epsom & Ewell School — SEN Specialist Refurbishment
As part of the school’s ongoing development plan, Epsom & Ewell committed to improving and enhancing its SEND provision. The works comprised refurbishing the existing Wave and Lecture Room areas (c.390m²) into a new Wave Common Room with adjacent offices, reception, classrooms and a quiet study/prayer room, plus a new Philip Southcote SEN Teaching Zone with a classroom, breakout rooms, a life skills kitchen and office space.
Internal refurbishment
- Complete strip-out of internal and external elements — free-standing items, services, partitions and ceilings
- Door removals, widening and reinstallation; new studwork partitions
- Removal and reinstatement of suspended ceilings
- New kitchen units and appliances for the SEND life-skills kitchen
- New flooring throughout, including carpets and vinyl
- New light fittings, fire alarm upgrade, and new electrical sockets and data points
- New heating and air conditioning systems
- Access controls integrated with the existing fob system, plus a CO² monitor calibration system
External works
- New concrete access walkways
- Renovation and improvement of outside garden areas to create a wellbeing garden for students
The work was scheduled during the school term with an expectation of minimal disruption. We arranged, with the school’s agreement, to set up welfare facilities and the site office a week early, alongside a comprehensive fire evacuation plan for visitor and subcontractor access.
All personnel were required to sign in and out using a QR code, giving the site manager a live register for any potential evacuation. Onboarding and Health & Safety documents were also made available electronically via QR code.
The completed renovations enable Epsom & Ewell to offer a more modern, updated environment, with more classrooms to accommodate a growing number of students. The new Breakout room gives students a tranquil space away from the distractions of a typical classroom — and the whole project was delivered four weeks ahead of schedule despite the scope of works increasing along the way.
“Having previously had works completed by Colours Building Ltd, we were delighted when they were instructed to carry out our latest development. As ever, they were meticulous with their approach; always forthcoming with information and kept us up to date on progress throughout.”
